Suggested Questions to Ask During the Interview

Very frequently in interviews, the interviewer will ask you if you have any questions. You will want to have thought this through ahead of time, so that you can ask intelligent questions. Take a look at this list of possible questions to ask the interviewer, and plan your questions before the interview.
  • What is most important to succeed in this job?
  • After the first month, what would you expect that I will have accomplished?
  • Is this a newly created position or was someone promoted?
  • Can you describe the top responsibilities and duties for this position?
  • How does this position fit into the organizational structure of the company?
  • What are some of the challenges I will be facing during the first few months?
  • How much authority will I have to make decisions?
  • Could you describe the training I will receive?
  • How do people in this position best allocate their time?
  • Can you describe a typical day for me and the things I will be doing?
  • What are my most important relationships in this position - clients, customers, employees, others?
  • How do you evaluate performance and reward successes?
  • What learning opportunities (training, education, professional development) are available here?
  • How is the management style reflected in daily operations?
  • Can you describe the organizations corporate philosophy?
  • What are the departments or companys goals for the year?
  • Who are the people I will be working with and what are their positions?
  • To whom will I report and whats his/her management style?
  • If you were to offer me this job, where could I expect to be in five years?

Things Not to Do
  • Don't chew gum.
  • Don't smoke just before you go in.
  • Don't go in with bad breath.
  • Don't be so rushed for time that you run in all hot and sweaty.
  • Don't forget to give yourself and your teeth a once over in the mirror.
  • Don't be late.
  • Don't go in with keys in hand, etc. Carry just a portfolio and/or purse.
  • Don't place anything on the interviewer's desk.
  • Don't leave your cell phone on.
  • Don't have a messy resume.
  • Don't slouch during the interview.
  • Don't fidget during the interview.
  • Don't be negative or boastful.
  • Don't exaggerate.
  • Don't have a limp handshake.
  • Don't show poor manners or use inappropriate language.
  • Don't speak with poor grammar.
  • Don't ramble.
  • Don't forget to send a thank you note!
Things to Do
  • Notice what goes on in the office around you while you are waiting.
  • Shake hands with the interviewer confidently.
  • Address the interviewers by Mr. or Ms. unless you're asked to use their first names.
  • Wait to be seated until you are asked.
  • Remember the importance of good posture. Sitting tall conveys trust and confidence.
  • Listen carefully and avoid interrupting.
  • Show that you're a team player.
  • Make sure you communicate effectively.
  • Show your enthusiasm
  • Shake hands before leaving.
  • Ask when a hiring decision will be made and when you will be notified.
  • Express your appreciation for the interviewer's time and consideration.
  • Get a business card before you go.
  • Send a thank you note within 48 hours.
